Kids & Family Chess Playground

Every second Sunday, we’ve got the perfect setup: while the kids dive into their chess games, you get to kick back and enjoy a craft beer, an espresso, or a glass of wine. This is Berlin parenting done right — where the little ones sharpen their minds, and you take a well-deserved breather (or play chess too?).

During this event, you’ll also have the opportunity to assess your child’s current chess skill level to help determine the most suitable course placement.

  • Beginning at 13:30

  • All levels are welcome.

  • Free entry.

  • For kids aged 5-12.

Chess Playground offers a perfect combination of fun and socializing for kids, and relaxation for parents, making Sunday afternoons enjoyable for the whole family.

Chess Course for Kids Level I: Building the Foundation in GER

Introduce your kids to the fascinating world of chess! Our engaging course makes learning chess fun and approachable, teaching essential strategies and tactics that will have your kids playing with confidence by the end of the program.

This is Level One of the chess educational program at the World Chess Club Berlin. If you're unsure which level is right for your child, we recommend attending one of our free kids' events for a skill level assessment.

Course details:

  • January 26th – February 16th, 2025 (4 lessons)

  • Sundays from 12:00 to 13:30

  • Limited to 10 participants

  • €85 for four lessons

  • Conducted in German

What the kids’ll learn:

    • Introduction to chess and game objectives

    • Setting up the board

    • Understanding ranks, files, and diagonals

    • Pieces names, movements, and capturing

    • Identifying and using square coordinates

    • Chess Rules, winning and losing the game: Check, checkmate, draw, and stalemate

    • Introduction to time controls

    • Chess special moves: Castling, pawn promotion, and en passant Introduction to chess notation and scoring the game

    • Phases of the game: Opening, middle game, and endgame

    • Core strategies for opening success and positional concepts:

    • Controlling the center, developing pieces, king safety, avoiding early queen movements or repeated piece maneuvers

    • Understanding material Value: Pieces value points, calculation, exchange, sacrifice and win of material

    • Tactical foundations: Introduction to tactics: Forks, pins, skewers, and discovered attacks

    • Endgame fundamentals and key principles: Opposition, triangulation, square rule, and king activity

    • Essential checkmates: king and queen, king and rooks, and king and pawns endgames

    • Handling unique scenarios: king with two bishops, two knights, or knight and bishop endings

    • Tournament basics rules and etiquette: handling illegal moves, touch-move rule, offering draws, and managing nerves

    • Position evaluation, identifying strong, and weak pieces

    • Time controls & management techniques: Classic, rapid, blitz , and bullet formats

Meet the teacher:

The course is led by our amazing teacher Radwa Omar. Over the years, she has competed in national tournaments and women’s leagues, consistently securing second and third places. Her classical FIDE ELO is 1771, and she participates this season in the German chess league. Her warm and gentle teaching will help your kids understand chess and light up their passion for the game. The teacher speaks English and German.

Bring your little chess lovers to our Young Knights Tournament, designed for kids under 12 who love the game. This event promises fun, learning, and friendly competition.

All levels are welcome. 

  • Registration starts at 1PM, beginning at 1:30PM

This course empowers learners to expand their chess understanding through deeper opening strategies, advanced tactical thinking, endgame, and a structured decision-making process, equipping them for higher levels of play.

This is Level Two of the chess educational program at the World Chess Club Berlin. If you're unsure which level is right for your child, we recommend attending one of our free kids' events for a skill level assessment.

Course details:

  • February 23rd – March 16th, 2025 (4 lessons)

  • Sundays from 12:00 to 13:30

  • Limited to 10 participants

What the kids’ll learn:

    • Exploring opening playing styles & dynamics: open, semi-open, and closed games

    • Recap of Opening Principles

    • Revisiting foundational opening principles for successful play

    • Popular opening systems & understanding key ideas: Ruy López, Sicilian Defense, and Queen's Gambit

    • Recognizing and avoiding common traps (Scholar's Mate, Fried Liver Attack, etc. )

    • Essential Tactical Motifs Recap

    • Revisiting key tactical patterns through progressive puzzles

    • Understanding Combinations in Chess: Combining tactical ideas to gain material or achieve checkmate

    • Solving combinations for advanced tactical awareness: Learning to visualise & calculate 2-3 moves ahead

    • Identifying threats and responding effectively

    • Strategic considerations for trading pieces

    • Mastering Key Endgame Techniques

    • Strategies like opposition, triangulation, rule of the square, and centralizing the king

    • Lucena and Philidor positions for rook endgames

    • Creating passed pawns and mastering king and pawn endings

    • Minor Piece Endgames

    • Leveraging bishop dominance in open positions

    • Utilizing knight dominance in closed positions

    • Calculation & visualisation: Evaluating checks, captures, and threats

    • Applying the "check your move" technique for error reduction, and analyzing candidate moves

    • Strategic Decision-Making: Determining when to attack or defend, and balancing material advantage with positional considerations

    • Blunder prevention: Recognizing, and avoiding common pitfalls

This course offers in-depth strategic, tactical, and psychological tools for chess enthusiasts aiming to refine their skills and excel in competitive play.

This is Level Three of the chess educational program at the World Chess Club Berlin. If you're unsure which level is right for your child, we recommend attending one of our free kids' events for a skill level assessment.

  • March 23rd – April 13th, 2025 (4 lessons)

    • Complex endgame techniques

    • Advanced rook endgames, and maximizing activity

    • Ensuring king safety in critical rook endgame scenarios

    • Complex Pawn Endgames

    • Leveraging passed pawns and understanding backward, isolated, and poisoned pawns

    • Minor piece endgames: Mastering bishop vs. knight endgames, and strategic insights into opposite - colored bishops

    • Converting material advantage into victory

    • Tailoring openings to your style: selecting aggressive or positional opening systems based on player preferences

    • Pawn Structures and Planning

    • A deeper understanding of key opening systems, variations, and traps: Ruy López, Sicilian, and King's Indian Defense

    • Assessing material balance, and identifying weaknesses: king safety, piece activity, pawn structures, and weak squares

    • Creating and executing plans: Formulating short-term and long-term plans, improving piece activity, and creating imbalances

    • Positional sacrifices: utilizing material sacrifices for strategic and positional advantages

    • Post-Game analysis: identifying mistakes and areas for improvement, using chess engines and literature for deeper learning

    • Tournament preparation: Preparing tailored opening lines for specific opponents, mental & psychological training, and techniques to improve focus and concentration during games

    • Enhancing skills through practice: participation in local chess clubs and online platforms for exposure and growth, and competing in tournament

    • Recommending age-appropriate books, videos, and online resources

Rapid chess strikes the perfect balance between speed and strategy, giving players enough time to think deeply while keeping the games exciting.
